Holy Smokes, Red Auerbach!
There was only one Red Auerbach. In 1950, the young basketball coaching prodigy took over a struggling, four-year-old NBA franchise and transformed the Celtics into a dynastic powerhouse unmatched in all of sports history. Auerbach led Boston to nine NBA World Championship titles as head coach, then won another seven in the front office as president and GM. In all, Auerbach spent 57 years with the Celtics – more than a half century of consistent winning. For a city known for its sports legacy, Auerbach endures as the most revered non-playing sports figure in Boston history. Respected for his leadership, recognized for his basketball brilliance, and known for a customary cloud of cigar smoke, there aren’t many figures in the NBA narrative as iconic as Red.
