1986 Championship Hardware
Date: June 8, 1986
The Celtics added another piece of hardware to their trophy collection by winning the franchise’s 16th NBA World Championship title in 1986. The two-foot, 20-pound trophy featured 22-carat gold over sterling silver, and was initially created in 1977 by famed jewelry company Tiffany & Co. Renamed after former NBA Commissioner Larry O’Brien in 1984, a new Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy is awarded to each NBA World Championship team annually. Following Game 6 of the 1986 NBA Finals, Commissioner David Stern presented Celtics President Red Auerbach with this very trophy and said, “16 out of 40 [titles], the greatest winning tradition.”
