A Handshake Agreement
Date: 1950s to 1960s
By all accounts, Celtics owner and founder Walter Brown had a strong relationship with his players. John Havlicek recalled that Brown “didn’t go around waving a diamond ring in people’s faces, or anything like that. He had a reputation as an individual who never went back on his word. He liked to do business with a handshake.” This image of Brown (left) shaking hands with Gene Conley seems to prove Havlicek right.
