A Season of Changes
With the encouragement of team patriarch Red Auerbach, the Celtics hired former player and Phoenix Suns Coach Danny Ainge as the new Director of Basketball Operations. Ainge wasted little time reshaping the roster, sending three-time All-Star Antoine Walker and starting guard Tony Delk to the Dallas Mavericks just a week before the 2003-04 season started. Ainge waived troubled forward Vin Baker and made two more trades during the season, including a six-player deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers in December and a seven-player, three-team deal in February which nearly overturned the roster completely. The moves frustrated Coach Jim O’Brien, who resigned in January, and the Celtics struggled down the stretch under interim Coach John Carroll to a 36-46 record.
