Bird Takes Flight in ’81
Date: 1980-81 season
A new championship era in Boston began in the 1980-81 season with the additions of Robert Parish and Kevin McHale to a young team that already featured Larry Bird, Gerald Henderson and Cedric Maxwell. The roster combinations worked out for Coach Bill Fitch as the Celtics captured their 14th NBA World Championship title. Bird had assumed the role of captain that season following Dave Cowens’ retirement. “Bird has a special quality about him,” stated his yearbook biography. “He is a great player with skills beyond practically all. Since these skills are completely related to team play he brings out an understanding of team play in basketball fans. Fans cheer his play and increase home court advantage.”
