Boston Garden to the Rose Garden
Date: June 13, 1984
President Ronald Reagan addressed a White House gathering to honor the 1984 NBA World Champion Celtics, who were joined by NBA Commissioner David Stern. Despite the formal atmosphere, the Celtics and President Reagan seemed to have fun. After describing Boston’s run of success under Red Auerbach, Reagan joked, “Aren’t you afraid you might be getting into a rut?” In the 92-degree heat, Dennis Johnson kidded around before presenting the president with a signed basketball. “Before I present this ball, I’d like to ask the president: ‘How do you stand out here and don’t sweat?'” Johnson asked. One voice from the wings yelled, “The president is cool!”
