Brown’s Big Bet
Date: 1950s to 1960s
Team founder Walter Brown’s commitment to the Celtics came at a significant financial sacrifice, from taking out second mortgages on his house, to selling his stock in his other business venture, the Ice Capades. The Celtics lost over a half-million dollars in the span of four years, yet Brown persisted. His wife Marjorie later said, “He was prepared to put everything he had into the Celtics because he believed in them.”
