Camp With the Celtics
It might be hard to imagine, but Celtics rookies and prospective free agents once gathered every summer at a camp in Marshfield, Massachusetts, owned by Jerry Volk. Starting around 1960, Red Auerbach and a cavalcade of coaches taught youngsters at Camp Milbrook, where Auerbach’s young Celtics players worked out alongside the kids. The camp was John Havlicek’s first stop as a Celtics player in 1962 as well as Larry Bird’s in 1979, though an injury to Bird put a scare into the fanbase. Steve Curley, a local coach who worked at the camp, remembered, “Satch Sanders, K.C. Jones, John Havlicek and Tom Heinsohn all slept in the same cabins as the kids. There was only one shower room.” Quite a difference from the modern Auerbach Center, where Boston holds summer workouts today!
