Celtics Fans Get Creative
Date: June 8, 1986
Two factors in the 1980s contributed toward an explosion of fan banners: older arenas that did not have enormous advertising signage, and televised games where producers looked for interesting things to put on the air during timeouts. Celtics fans brought their biggest and most colorful signs to Boston Garden and hung them on the edges of the upper deck, hoping to catch some airtime. The 1986 NBA Finals might have been the peak of fan banners with one stating “Indiana Bird and the Garden of Doom.”
