Coach Russell on the Floor
Date: 1968
When Red Auerbach moved on to a front office role, he turned to Bill Russell to replace him as the new Celtics head coach and the NBA’s first Black head coach. Here, in his role as player-coach, Russell talked with John Havlicek and Larry Siegfried during a game. In his three seasons simultaneously coaching and playing for Boston, Russell won two NBA World Championship titles. He later entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in May 2021.
