Cowens: Asleep on the Job
Date: 1970s
Dave Cowens celebrated Boston’s 1974 NBA World Championship title in a slightly unusual manner: by sleeping on a bench in Boston Common. He later said, “It was either very late or very early, depending on how you looked at it, and I was dead tired from all the excitement. I didn’t want to take a chance on driving, so when I saw the bench I decided to catch some Z’s.” The Celtics big man deserved some rest after his efforts in the 1974 NBA Finals, where he averaged nearly a double-double with 22.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
