John of All Trades
Date: 1940s
While John “Honey” Russell may have been the first head coach in Celtics history, he was a jack-of-all trades in the sports arena. Prior to his coaching career, he played basketball for the Chicago Bruins and football for the Chicago Bears under famed Coach George Halas. When his coaching days with the Celtics ended in 1948, he turned his focus to professional baseball scouting. On his busy life he said, “I always have three jobs at once. My biggest headache [is] coordinating my time among the three.”
