Light It Up One More Time for Red
Date: November 1, 2006
On Opening Night of the 2006-07 season, the Celtics paid tribute to team patriarch Red Auerbach, who had passed away just days before. Pregame ceremonies included a video tribute, the laying of a cigar on his TD Garden seat and special jersey patches bearing his nickname. No player wore the No. 2 jersey because it was officially retired for Auerbach in 1985. The number signified that Auerbach was the second most important person in franchise history behind only team founder Walter Brown. As the Celtics appeared to be headed for greatness early in the 2007-08 campaign, Paul Pierce said, “The only thing I wish is that Red could have been here to see it.”
