Never Cease-Sting
Date: 1985-86 season
Jerry Sichting knew he wasn’t going to be the starter he was for the Indiana Pacers when he landed in Boston just before the 1985-86 season. Coming to a winning franchise has a way of making people forget about their own statistics and focus on winning. After one memorable performance, the backup guard said, “You’re always going into situations that are different when you’re not a starter.” But his role was significant. Once, when Larry Bird saw the crowd of reporters around Sichting’s locker, Bird said, “I’ll come back when Jerry’s finished.”
