New England’s Celtics
While the Celtics play in Boston, there’s no doubt that basketball fans throughout New England claim the team as their own. In the franchise’s early days, the Celtics played “home” games across New England, including in Bangor, Maine; Springfield, Worcester and Amherst, Massachusetts; New London and New Haven, Connecticut; and their primary “home away from home” at the Rhode Island Auditorium in Providence. Between 1949 and 1975, the Celtics posted a 55-15 record in Providence before making Hartford, Connecticut, their auxiliary home, where they won 46 of 66 games at the Civic Center from 1974 to 1995. While the Celtics played all home games in Boston since 1995, the popularity of their G League affiliate in Portland, Maine, showed their continued regional appeal.
