New Faces, Same Opponent
Danny Ainge bolstered the Celtics in the 2017-18 season by adding All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward to the mix. Hayward reunited with his former Butler University Coach Brad Stevens, but his season ended five minutes into his first game when he suffered a leg injury. Irving’s All-Star season ended in March due to injury, but the Celtics continued to play well and ended with 55 wins, the most in seven years. Without Hayward and Irving, Al Horford turned in an All-Star campaign and earned a place on the All-Defense Second Team. In the 2018 NBA Playoffs, Boston ousted the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, setting up a rematch with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Unfortunately, Boston’s young guns struggled against James in the seven-game series defeat.
