Shiny Objects for the Bird’s Nest
Date: May 18, 1981
In just his second season with the team, Larry Bird helped turn the hapless Celtics of the late 1970s into an NBA World Champion. Bird thanked the more than 50,000 fans outside the Government Center as part of the team’s championship parade. To the many City Hall employees who hounded Bird for autographs, the young phenom joked and said, “we know why the city’s going bankrupt. It’s because the only thing city employees ever do is go around asking for autographs.”
