The One that Started It All
Date: Undated
Members of the 1956-57 NBA World Championship team, the first in Celtics history, put their signature on this basketball. Led by Head Coach Red Auerbach, the Celtics prevailed in the series’ remarkable double-overtime Game 7 against the St. Louis Hawks. Bill Russell tied the game at the end of regulation, then blocked a Hawks shot that would have given St. Louis the win in OT. Frank Ramsey scored clutch baskets in both overtime periods, while Tommy Heinsohn led the Celtics with 37 points and grabbed 23 rebounds, second only to Russell’s 32 boards. Said Arnie Risen, “Seven wonderful games, five by two points, what could have been closer?”
